About the Art
In 1912, as Theodore Roosevelt campaigned for president under the Progressive Party — nicknamed the “Bull Moose Party” — philanthropist August Heckscher gifted him this striking moose painting by Carl Rungius in celebration of his 54th birthday.
The work depicts a moose charging toward the viewer, its head lowered in a powerful display of strength and determination. The impressionistic style, with soft, blurred strokes, highlights a stark, barren landscape of dead trees and yellowed grass — reflecting both the rugged wilderness Roosevelt loved so dearly and his relentless spirit during this pivotal time in American politics.
This painting now hangs in the Library at the Theodore Roosevelt Home, proudly displayed above a bookcase. A symbol of Roosevelt’s indomitable will, it connects the strength of the moose to the larger-than-life character of the man who led the Progressive movement.

Carl Rungius
Carl Rungius was one of North America’s most influential wildlife and sporting artists, best known for his powerful depictions of big game animals in their natural habitats.
Born in Germany and trained at the Berlin Art Academy, Rungius had a lifelong fascination with both art and hunting. His first trip to the American West in 1894—on a hunting expedition to Wyoming—was a turning point that fused his passions and set the course for his career.
Rungius quickly established himself as a leading figure in the genre of sporting art, capturing the spirit of the hunt and the grandeur of the wilderness with a unique blend of anatomical precision and painterly drama.
His subjects—elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and bears—were not just trophies but symbols of a vanishing frontier. A committed outdoorsman and skilled hunter, Rungius believed deeply in fair chase ethics and the conservation of game species, values that informed both his art and personal philosophy.
Unlike many artists of his time, Rungius insisted on painting wildlife in the field, often spending months in remote regions of the Rockies, both hunting and sketching.
His firsthand knowledge of animal behavior and anatomy gave his work an authenticity that resonated with sportsmen and collectors alike. His paintings appeared in publications like Outdoor Life and hung in the homes of prominent hunters and naturalists.

What size print should I order?
The size of your print largely depends on where you want to hang it. For art hung over a sofa or a bed choose a print which is 75% the length of the furniture.
For example, if your sofa measures 80 inches in length you’d want a print that is at least 55 inches. For over the bed placement, measure the length of the headboard.
If you are hanging a print over the fireplace, however, it generally looks best when you choose a print that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace.
Though, sometimes a print that is the length of the mantle can also look nice.
When choosing wall art for a mostly empty wall, the print should take up 60% of the available space, so for an 8 foot wall you’d want a 55-60 inch print.
If there are other items filling part of the space, like furniture, you may want to go smaller so things look more balanced.
