About the Art
“The Deer Hunt”, painted in 1718 is a landmark example of Alexandre‑François Desportes’ contribution to French hunting art.
Painted for the aristocratic elite of early 18th-century France, the work reflects the importance of hunting not only as sport but as a symbol of status and power. Hunting dogs pursue a deer through a densely wooded forest, as hunters follow closely behind.
Desportes was commissioned by members of the royal court, including Louis XIV and Louis XV, to create works that adorned palaces such as Versailles and Marly. At the time, hunting paintings were considered a vital part of aristocratic culture.
Historically, Desportes helped establish hunting scenes as a respected genre in French art, and the original now hangs in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, France.

Alexandre-Francois Desportes
Alexandre-François Desportes (1661–1743) was a French painter best known for his refined depictions of animals, hunting scenes, and still lifes. Trained initially in portraiture, Desportes developed a reputation for his ability to capture the textures and vitality of dogs, game, and natural settings with remarkable realism. His skill quickly drew the attention of the French aristocracy, where hunting was both a pastime and a symbol of power.
By the early 18th century, Desportes had secured royal patronage under Louis XIV, Louis XV, and members of the French court. He was frequently commissioned to paint portraits of hunting dogs, elaborate hunting scenes, and decorative works for royal residences, including Versailles and Marly.
His paintings not only showcased technical mastery but also reinforced the culture of hunting as a marker of status in France’s Ancien Régime.
Desportes’ legacy lies in his role as one of the foremost animal and hunting painters of his time. His works influenced later artists such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry, who continued and expanded the tradition of French animal painting.
Today, Desportes is remembered for combining naturalistic detail with courtly grandeur, making his art a valuable record of both the aesthetics and aristocratic traditions of early 18th-century France.

What size print should I order?
The size of your print largely depends on where you want to hang it. For art hung over a sofa or a bed choose a print which is 75% the length of the furniture.
For example, if your sofa measures 80 inches in length you’d want a print that is at least 55 inches. For over the bed placement, measure the length of the headboard.
If you are hanging a print over the fireplace, however, it generally looks best when you choose a print that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace.
Though, sometimes a print that is the length of the mantle can also look nice.
When choosing wall art for a mostly empty wall, the print should take up 60% of the available space, so for an 8 foot wall you’d want a 55-60 inch print.
If there are other items filling part of the space, like furniture, you may want to go smaller so things look more balanced.
