About the Art
‘Serving the Guns‘ painted in 1902 by Maud Earl features a handsome golden retriever next to a pile of pheasants. Like much of Earl’s work, this painting features a a beautiful landscape and a romanticized view of sporting culture.
Many of Earl’s paintings were commissioned for wealthy patrons looking to decorate their lavish homes with art showcasing their beloved dogs, which was fashionable at the time.
However, This painting was also re-produced in many ways, as Earl’s work was frequently printed in various publications and Sporting Journals.

Maud Alice Earl
Maud Alice Earl was a British-American artist known for her canine paintings. Part of a long line of painters in her family, Earl continued the tradition by becoming a court painter, creating works for royals such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandria.
She received her initial training from her father, George Earl, an accomplished painter of sporting art in his own right, before enrolling at the Royal Female School of Art.
Earl became quite famous in the Victorian Era, a time where women were not expected to earn a living from painting. In addition to her high profile commissions, her work was also printed in numerous books, advertisements, and sporting journals of the time.

What size print should I order?
The size of your print largely depends on where you want to hang it. For art hung over a sofa or a bed choose a print which is 75% the length of the furniture.
For example, if your sofa measures 80 inches in length you’d want a print that is at least 55 inches. For over the bed placement, measure the length of the headboard.
If you are hanging a print over the fireplace, however, it generally looks best when you choose a print that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace.
Though, sometimes a print that is the length of the mantle can also look nice.
When choosing wall art for a mostly empty wall, the print should take up 60% of the available space, so for an 8 foot wall you’d want a 55-60 inch print.
If there are other items filling part of the space, like furniture, you may want to go smaller so things look more balanced.
